VIDEO: Mbombela taxi operators dress in their best in honour of women
The chairperson of Top Star Taxi Association, John Mavundla, said they want local women to know that as taxi operators they respect them for the role they play in society and they support the fight against gender-based violence.
On a mission to honour women and recognise them for what they do in the community, Mbombela taxi operators recently traded their usual trousers for dresses.
On Friday, August 30, they performed their duties of transporting commuters dressed in style, and some even put on make-up.

The chairperson of Top Star Taxi Association, John Mavundla, said they saw it fit to do something different for Women’s Month, because they want all the women, young and old, to know that local taxi operators understand the challenges they face on a daily basis.

Mavundla said they want women to know they play a vital role in the community.
“We appreciate them as they are our mothers, sisters and children, and we appreciate how they take care of all of us, and they are always going the extra mile for us. As we dressed up, it was our way to show them they are appreciated.”
Mavundla said this was the taxi operators’ way of showing that they stand against gender-based violence.
He said as a way to show all the women that they are respected and recognised for their strength, they have also opened up opportunities for them to join the men in the transport industry.

“We welcome women who want to be taxi operators, as long as they have a driver’s licence and a professional driving permit,” said Mavundla.
He added that they also handed out sanitary towels and doeks to their female commuters on the day.
