More than R70 000 raised during CANSA Car Sit-in

CANSA Mpumalanga received a major boost as they managed to raise R75 000 during the 2024 CANSA Car Sit-in held at i'langa Mall from August 30 to September 1.

The 2024 CANSA Car Sit-in held at i’langa Mall was a smash hit on all fronts as roughly R75 000 was raised in support of CANSA Mpumalanga.

The initiative was the brainchild of the organisation’s Rinella Janse van Vuuren, who had been inspired by similar competitions held in the Highveld and in other countries. She saw it as a unique way to try and raise some much-needed funding for the association.

For the sit-in, eight participants would be locked in a car, provided by Mahindra Nelspruit, for 24 hours while they had to try and coax as many people as possible into donating to CANSA’s cause in that time frame. This would be done in two groups of four for two separate 24-hour stints.

There would also be additional people placed in the boot for an hour at a time. They could be bailed out at any time before the hour was up, so long as they raised R1 000 for CANSA. Many of them ultimately spent longer than needed in the car as they ended up having such a blast.

Some of the participants in the boot included Innibos’s Sandra Jacobs, some Airlink Pumas players, learners and staff of Hoërskool Nelspruit and Hoërskool Bergvlam, and the CANSA Mpumalanga Global Hero for Hope, Marlene Pretorius.

The first four people locked in the car were Cayla Janse van Vuuren, Riaan van den Bergh, Ethan Koorts and Daniella Bantjies. They hopped in on Friday at 14:00, completing their stint on Saturday at 14:00.

They were then relayed by the second group of participants, comprised of i’langa Mall’s marketing manager Henri Gouws, Coenie Naudé of Radio Laeveld, the director of the MP4U Foundation, Jessica Prim, and Lowvelder’s very own Blake Linder. Each group ended up having more fun than they could have imagined being locked in a car for 24 hours.

The fundraising aspect of the CANSA Car Sit-in was also successful. The target initially set for the weekend was R40 000, but the efforts of those in the car and those contributing from all over the world ensured that this target was blown out of the water.

When the bell tolled on Sunday, the grand total donated came to R75 410, far more than what was expected.
