Outstanding vehicle licence fees can now be paid in instalments

Vehicle owners facing substantial licence fee arrears can now apply for authorisation to settle their debt in instalments and avoid being blocked on the eNatis system.

Vehicle owners who are in arrears with their vehicle licence fees can now apply to settle their outstanding fees in instalments.

The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison (DCSSL) made this announcement on Thursday, August 29, urging those with outstanding fees to come forward and make arrangements.

This also applies to vehicles that were written off in accidents but are still registered on the eNatis System.
“In terms of the law, these vehicle owners are liable for payments until such vehicles are deregistered.

The non-deregistration leads to the accumulation of penalties due to outstanding fees,” said the department’s spokesperson, Moeti Mmusi.

He urged members of the public to deregister vehicles once they are no longer in use and to follow up with insurance companies to ensure the vehicle has been removed from their name.

Mmusi said aside from individual vehicle owners, there were also big companies that owed the state millions of rands.

According to the department’s chief director of transport regulation, Sibandiso Nkuna, if the owner is unable to pay a renewal fee, it attracts penalty fees and interests on a monthly basis, and motorists may end up owing astronomical amounts if the outstanding fees are not settled on time.

Mmusi warned that outstanding fees reflecting on the system would disqualify a vehicle owner from renewing any vehicle licence or registering a new vehicle.

“The system will generate an administrative mark on the system, and it will block the applicant to either apply for or renew a driving licence or renew or register another vehicle,” he explained.

He said the department was aware that some motorists or companies owed a lot of money and would not be able to pay all of it at once, which is why they have come up with a policy to allow motorists to apply for an arrangement to pay the arrears in instalments.

To make such an arrangement, make an appointment by calling 013 766 1542, Mondays to Fridays, during working hours between 07:45 and 16:15.
