Mpumalanga’s best cross-country athletes tackle tough Curro Nelspruit course

The Athletics Mpumalanga Cross Country Championships were held at Curro Nelspruit on August 17, with nearly 800 runners hitting the track on a hot day out.

The very best Mpumalanga cross-country athletes flocked to Curro Nelspruit on Saturday, August 17, for the provincial championships, battling a hot day and a tough course in pursuit of top honours.

Curro Nelspruit is set out over some hilly terrain, and the course that was designed and set up at the school for the provincial championships made the most of the topography. Regardless of the distance the athletes would be running, they would face at least one uphill at some point along the route.

This would surely test even the very best of the province’s cross-country runners as the weather conditions played their part in adding to a challenging day out.

The temperatures on Saturday reached well into the 30s, making it a true scorcher of a Lowveld winter’s day.

Runners were not only running in the hope of winning a medal and being crowned the best in the province, but also to qualify and be selected for the provincial cross-country team.

The Mpumalanga cross-country team selected from the championships will go on to represent the province at the SA Cross-country Championships, which is being hosted by Athletics Vaal Triangle this year.

Some 786 runners took part in the Mpumalanga championships on Saturday.

The programme for the day was jam-packed and there was never a dull moment as running action was on show from the early morning right through to the late afternoon.
