Simple tips to stay in tip-top shape in smoky conditions in the Lowveld

Minor headaches and sinus build-ups are the most common symptoms residents are bound to experience. A pharmacist explains.

On Friday July 5, fires started raging throughout the Lowveld, some of which are still ongoing.

With the intensity and thickness of the smoke only worsening, pharmacist Verity Izeboud shares some helpful tips to keep residents safe and healthy.

She notes that due to the dry season, wind blowing up dust and the recent build-up of smoke, it is likely that residents will experience minor headaches and sinus build-ups. These cases are also more likely to be connected to flu viruses.

“There have been more cases related to flu viruses than smoke-induced cases. Any sinus build-up caused by smoke exposure, though unpleasant, is not a health risk if the exposure is short-term,” says Izeboud.

She adds that staying hydrated and protecting your airways will be an ideal countermeasure for the smoke build-up.

“Using moisturising nasal spray and eye drops and staying hydrated are good preventative measures.”

Izeboud notes that the higher the smoke and pollution density, the greater one’s countermeasures must be.

In these areas where the smoke concentration is higher, she believes that keeping your doors and windows shut will help with lessening smoke exposure.

She says wearing a mask would be helpful to protect your airways, again emphasising that short-term exposure is unlikely to pose a health risk.

However, should any symptoms persist, Izeboud advises residents to consult their doctor.
