Work finally starts on R40 to Hazyview
Repairs of the sinkhole near Klipkopjes Dam will commence on June 3, however, the contractor has started with repairs to the damaged road in Marite near Hazyview, and at Injaka Dam
The rebuilding of certain sections of the damaged R40 has started, while repairs to the sinkhole near the Klipkopjes Dam will commence on June 3.
Sanral’s project manager for the northern region, Tony Seloana, said a contractor, VEA Roads Maintenance, is finally on-site to begin with repairs to the damaged sections of the busy R40.
He said they will not only focus on the sinkhole near the Klipkopjes Dam, but are also attending to the most problematic issues along the 19.6km stretch of road.

“The sinkhole requires expertise as it’s a natural phenomenon. The engineers were on-site to find the best solutions to resolve the issue.
“The sinkhole will be repaired at the same time as the vehicle restraining systems on the Witwaterspruit River Bridge. The contractor is scheduled to start with the repairs to the sinkhole on June 3,” he said.
Currently, the contractor is repairing the damaged road in Marite near Hazyview and at Injaka Dam.
Seloana also requested motorists to be patient and drive with caution when approaching the area while construction is undertaken.
Sanral had set aside between R18m and R40m for the rehabilitation of the R40.

This busy route was damaged by heavy storms across the Lowveld in February last year.
Some of the roads that had been closed due to these damages have been temporarily reopened, but this specific stretch of the R40 is still operating on a stop-and-go basis.
Another stop has been added on the R40 near Injaka Dam. This will soon be a thing of the past, with the long-awaited refurbishment in process.
