Brothers fatally shot in Calcutta

A shooting in a tavern led to the deaths of two brothers, and two people were hospitalised with gunshot wounds.

Two brothers, aged 25 and 30, were killed during a shooting at a tavern in Mantangaleni Trust in Calcutta, while a 35-year-old woman and a 29-year-old man were hospitalised after sustaining gunshot wounds.

The incident took place at about 23:40 on Friday February 23.

According to a provincial police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, some unknown suspects had approached the victims and opened fire.

“It is alleged that the suspects also took a firearm from one of the deceased. On arrival of the police, the first victim was found next to the rear right wheel of his vehicle, while his brother was found a few metres away.”

He said the brothers had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and were declared dead on the scene by medical pepersonnel.

The woman was shot in her thigh and the man was shot in his upper body.

“Twelve empty 9mm cartridge cases and one projectile were found at the scene. The police have launched an investigation.”

Nkosi said the police urge anyone who might have information about the suspects to contact Calcutta SAPS Detective Branch Commander Lieutenant Colonel Sikhumbuzo Ceko on 082 922 9902 or the Crime Stop number on 08600 10111. Alternatively, use the My SAPS app. All received information will be treated as confidential and callers may opt to remain anonymous.
