Veteran runner mentors young athletes of Mampuru II Primary in Steelpoort

Makua said some of the young athletes did excellently during the school's interhouse athletics recently.

Veteran runner Daniel Makua (56) is mentoring some young athletes of Mampuru II Primary School in Steelpoort, saying he wants to share his knowledge and skills with the young ones.

“I was approached by the school to train these young athletes. I enjoy working with the youngsters as they are eager to learn and are determined to succeed.”

According to Makua, some of the young athletes did excellently during the school’s interhouse athletics. Marekwa Mokoena won a 200m, Nature Selota won a 1 200m and 100m, Kamogelo Kgole won a 100m, Neo Mohlalefi won a 1 500m and Thami Kgalema won a 1 200m race.

“We need youngsters who are fit and healthy. When I retire, I plan to launch an athletics club to encourage the local youths to participate in sports activities.”

He says 2024 will see him put much focus on his passion, which is running. He plans to run another Comrades Marathon this year. “I missed the 2023 race as I was nursing an injury, but I am working hard to prepare for 2024,” said the man from Ga-Mampuru.

“I have lost count of the races in which I took part, but in my history of running, I have completed 11 Comrades Marathons.”
