IN PHOTOS: Lowveld Grade One learners tackle first day of 12-year journey

The excited and nervous Grade One learners’ first day of primary school were captured by Lowvelder.

After a well-deserved holiday, teachers and learners returned to school this week.

Bonakele Majuba, the MEC for education, said the province welcomed more than one million learners from grades R to 12 on Wednesday January 17.

The Grade One learners reached a significant milestone as they began their school journeys, accompanied by their parents.

Majuba said that every effort had been made by the department to ensure that children of school-going age were admitted within the province, in keeping to the country’s constitutional mandate.

He added that they are aware that there are parents, especially in the fast-growing areas such as Mbombela, whose children are on admission waiting lists. He added they are making the necessary interventions to ensure that all learners have a place in the classroom.
