Local businesses revamp Loco Street in Mbombela

In response to community complaints about the road, local businesses decided to revamp Loco Street that was in bad condition.

Once again taxpaying businesses are using their own money to do the work of the local municipality by rehabilitating a badly damaged road.

Thanks to a collaboration between Coastal Hire Mbombela, Marlin Pub & Grill, Lafarge Cement and We Care 4 Nelspruit, a section of Loco Street connecting Vintonia and Riverside Industrial Park is being totally revamped.

According to the founder of We Care 4 Nelspruit, Pr TJ Maré, they were asked by business owners to assist in the project. This organisation has been providing many services that are the responsibility of the local municipality.

“As residents realise that the upkeep of the City is not prioritised by the City of Mbombela’s (CoM) paid officials, many more taxpaying individuals and businesses have joined hands with us to ensure the environment is properly taken care of.

“We are removing the 50m-long tar section of the road that is badly damaged and rebuilding it from scratch. We are also going to work on the storm water drainage that is damaging the road and put pipes in if necessary to control water,” Maré explained.

He also called on provincial and local governments to maintain the road since it is situated in a high-impact economic area featuring a historic bridge.

He thanked all the sponsors who came on board to assist with the project as part of giving back to the community.

Coastal Hire Mbombela, Marlin Pub & Grill and Lafarge Cement said they are revamping the road because it carries the traffic in the area in which they operate.

“This been affecting our customers and other motorists who use the road. The fact that it has been in a bad state for a long time, was one of the reasons we decided that we must get involved and fix it. We are also calling on local government to come on board and rally behind us to make sure that the road is well maintained,” they said.

CoM was not available for comment by the time of going to press.
