Additional suspect in Malelane cash-in-transit heist to apply for bail

The accused will be joining three police officers and four civilians for the alleged attack on and robbery of a Fidelity armoured vehicle between Malalane and Schoemansdal in August.

An eighth accused in a cash-in-transit heist, Martin Mnisi (29), made his first court appearance in the Malelane Periodical Court on Wednesday October 9.

He is facing charges of attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of ammunition, conspiracy to commit to a crime, contravention of Explosives Act and defeating the ends of justice.

Mnisi has faced similar charges before and made court appearances in the KaBokweni and White River courts, respectively.

He will be joining three police officers and four civilians, who were granted bail of R5 000 each by the Tonga Magistrates’ Court on October 3.

It is alleged that a group of unknown men ambushed a Fidelity armoured vehicle on the R570 between Malalane and Schoemansdal on August 11.

They were driving a Mercedes-Benz C-Class and rammed the cash van, which overturned. It was further alleged that security guards were forced out of the vehicle and high calibre rifles were used on the scene in which one security officer was disarmed.

The case against Mnisi was postponed to October 16 for a formal bail application.

Due to the seriousness of the offences the accused is charged with the state is opposing bail and the accused was remanded in custody pending the outcome of his bail application.
