Pupils of White River school place second in prestigious competition

The King's School in White River recently had four of its learners come in second place in a national competition.

Four matric learners of The King’s School recently placed second out of 10 finalists from across the country in the prestigious Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) Schools Challenge.

This school was the only one in the province to make the top 10 finals, and came second to Paarl Girls’ High School. The challenge is a flagship social investment programme by the South African Reserve Bank (SARB).

With their second-place win, Chantel Mndawe, Refiloe Manana, Siphokazi Mamba and Denzel Bizure brought pride not only to their school, but to the province as well.

Meryl van den Berg of The King’s School said initially, 400 schools entered the competition in February, and then 181 schools each submitted a 1 000-word essay that was assessed by analysts and economists of the SARB, of which the top 10 was selected.

Out of the top 10 schools in the competition, one was a private school in White River, a school well known for academic excellence in Mpumalanga.

Van den Berg said the learners won both the school and themselves wonderful prizes. “These ambassadors of Mpumalanga were impressive and represented their province with pride,” she said.
