Mpumalanga Rhinos suffer eight-wicket defeat at the hands of the Eastern Cape Iinyathi at Uplands

The Mpumalanga team finished bottom of the log.

The Mpumalanga Rhinos finished the CSA 4-Day Series winless after an eight-wicket defeat to the Eastern Cape Iinyathi at Uplands.

The match was scheduled to take place from last Thursday to Sunday, but the Iinyathi wrapped up a win by eight wickets within three days.

The home team won the toss on Thursday and elected to bat.

Tumi Koto fell with the score on 35, caught Jason Niemand, bowled Siphesihle Madlongolwana.

Yassar Cook joined Benjamin van Niekerk and they took the score to 106 before the opener was caught by Marco Marais off the bowling of Jade de Klerk.

Muhammed Mayet came to the crease and played a master innings. With Cook they took the score to 193 before he was trapped LBW by Thomas Kaber.

Jurie Snyman came in, but lost his wicket for just five runs.

From hereon in it was a nightmare for the Rhinos, with Mayet’s batting partners heading back to the pavilion in regular succession and the home team all out for 256.

Mayet finished on 102 off 167 balls.

Kaber took four for 71 in 18.3 overs and De Klerk claimed four from 85 in 24 overs.

The Eastern Cape Iinyathi seemed to have batting woes of their own as they stumbled to 141 for five at stumps.

Lindokuhle Puwali and Alexander Kok did business, with only Nonelela Yikha offering any resistance.

Friday’s play was dominated by the visitors.

The Rhinos bowlers toiled in the sun with little success, with the exception of Kok, and the Iinyathi were eventually bowled out for 321, with Yikha getting 104 and the tail wagging with vigour.

Kok took seven for 81 in 36 overs.

The Rhinos’ second innings was a dismal affair. They were all out for 180, giving the visitors a target of 115 to win on day three.

Jurie Snyman top-scored with 53 for the hosts.

The Iinyathi made short work of chasing the necessary runs. They sprinted to 116 for two in 29 overs to hand the Rhinos an embarrassing defeat.

Joshua van Heerden hit 47 runs and Jerry Nqolo 42 off 51.

The 2022/23 CSA 4-Day Series was won by the Northern Cape Heat.
