Nelspruit SPCA educates the Barberton area

The Nelspruit SPCA took to Barberton last week to educate community members and ensure all animals were looked after.

On June 15 and 16, the Nelspruit SPCA once again did proactive work in Emjindini in Barberton. Food and blankets were distributed to dogs, as well as dog houses that the agency had available.

“Our construction skills again came to the test to build makeshift shelters,” said the SPCA.

It said sheltering for animals remains a big challenge there.

“We educate the community on how to take proper care of their animals, but in many cases, they simply do not have the resources. We also attended to shelters for pigs and chickens, and provided food. The importance of clean drinking water for all animals at all times was once again emphasised.”

The SPCA further conducted abattoir inspections in Barberton. The reason, it said, was to ensure that the animals slaughtered for consumption were treated as humanely as possible and that all rules and procedures were followed.

Post-adoption home inspections were also done. This was to ensure that animals adopted from the SPCA were still in a good physical condition, that their general welfare and living conditions were up to standard, and that the stipulations of the adoption contract were honoured.

The SPCA thanked its two employees who went out to the communities on these two days.

“All donations received from the Barberton community are used for the animals in Barberton, be it food or blankets, funds for fuel, and medical attention, as well as to take care of the animals should we have to take them to our kennels in Nelspruit,” said the SPCA.
