Police found and arrested a man who had an illegal gun and ammunition on June 15.

A 25-year-old man in was arrested on June 15 for the possession of an unlicensed firearm with ammunition in Lows Creek.

A statement by a provincial police spokesperson Brig Selvy Mohlala said that the arrest came after an intelligence-driven operation conducted by a team from Stabilization Operation 2.

Mohlala said information received by the team led them to a house in Low’s Creek and when the unit entered the home, they found a 25-year-old man with one Norinco pistol, eight rounds of ammunition and a magazine.

The man could not produce a licence for the weapon and was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm with ammunition.

The suspect is expected to appear at the Barberton Magistrate’s Court today, June 17.

“As part of the investigation, the confiscated firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it was used in the commission of crime elsewhere. Meanwhile police cannot rule out the possibility of adding more charges upon him,” said Mohlala.

The provincial police commissioner, Lt Gen Semakaleng Manamela, said that this arrest shows that the police will not back down in their quest to create a safe and secure environment for communities, which include tackling the proliferation of firearms in the society.

“I think by now the public are aware of the intensive work done by police recently with regard to the recovery of unlicensed firearms and ammunition which contributes to violent crimes in the province,” said Manamela.

“These achievements should serve as motivation to the general public to work closely with the police and provide valuable information that can assist in the recovery of even more firearms,” she said.
