Seven babies in need of clothes, nappies and food

Child Welfare Nelspruit asked for the community's intervention with baby essentials.

MBOMBELA – Nomfundo Myeza, the manager of this organisation in Ehmke Street, said, “We have seven babies and we are running out of baby supplies. These babies are a couple of weeks old, and the eldest is three months,” she said. These are vulnerable, orphaned children.

The institution relies heavily on funding from donors within the community. During an interview with Lowvelder, Myeza said the organisation has very little supplies left in its storeroom.

According to her, these kids are sometimes left at hospital immediately after birth and some are taken from parents struggling with drug addictions. “Some mothers leave their babies at hospitals due to problems they are facing. Their challenges vary from a lack of funds to some teenagers feeling that they are not capable to care for the baby.

“Sometimes you find a situation in which the parents of a teenager are not aware of the pregnancy, and to keep their secret they give birth and then leave the child. Other parents are struggling with addictions, and as an organisation we take the babies for safety reasons. This decision keeps them safe and well cared for,” she said.

The organisation said it will appreciate any form of assistance it can get. “We are in need of milk, nappies, feeding bottles, colic medicine, clothes, blankets and baby food. The items we have for now are running out and we need all the help we can get. We have managed to get these children temporary, safe, care parents. This is a process we do before they are adopted,” she explained.

Myeza added that the need for food parcels and funds donation has increased.

“Due to the pandemic, some people are losing their jobs and some are facing salary cuts. As an organisation, we assist them with food parcels and basic needs.”
