A little help goes a long way

Business Network International (BNI) Nelspruit is raising funds for GRIP.

It has started an initiative to raise much-needed funds to put together care packs and teddy bears for survivors and to recruit volunteers for maintenance work.

As a way to honour former President Nelson Mandela during his birthday month, BNI started this initiative to aid GRIP as it continues assisting thousands of survivors of rape and domestic abuse.

GRIP provides care packs and various forms of assistance to those who have been raped, from the moment they arrive at the police or hospital until the prosecution process has ended. It depends entirely on donated funds and fundraising initiatives.

Angie Louw of BNI said, “As the BNI synergy chapter, we decided to assist GRIP in Nelson Mandela’s month, following my visit to their offices.

We put our ideas together and we thought collecting teddies for the victims and products for the care packs for survivors would be the best place to start.

We then thought it would be nice for them to also be able to get funds to maintain their offices, to be able to provide the services they do for the community.”

Louw said they put together a list of things needed.

“They need second-hand or new furniture for care rooms and shelter, and maintenance workers, plumbers and electricians. Care packs contain underwear, soap, face cloths, tooth-paste, toothbrushes and sanitary towels. The teddy bears are for child survivors. They also need assistance with skills development training and monetary donations,” she explained.
