Food for Life provides vulnerable Lowvelders with hope

Food for Life is an international non-profit organisation, (NPO) with centres across South Africa and the rest of the world. There are five centres in Mpumalanga alone.

“Our organisation serves 15 000 meals a day across South Africa to vulnerable people in both urban and rural areas. We also distribute large food parcels to help families sustain themselves during this difficult period, where illness and poverty have taken a devastating toll on our people,” said Food for Life Nelspruit’s executive member, Mahesh Srini.

The mission and vision of this organisation is to eradicate hunger and malnutrition in South Africa.

“Recently, we provided food parcels in KaNyamazane, Pienaar, Mataffin, Valencia and Nelsville. Some of the community members were in tears when they received the parcels as many of them had not eaten for days. These are quite emotional personal experiences for me and our team,” Srini said.

“We have partnered with over 300 NPOs, community leaders, corporates and others to support homeless shelters, informal settlements, orphanages, disadvantaged crèches, old-age homes, hospices, disadvantaged schools and emergency food relief agencies to try to achieve the goal of our founder, Srila Prabhupad that ‘no one must go hungry’,” said Srini.

“We are supported by a wonderful team of volunteers who not only dedicate their time and effort, but also truly believe in serving our community with the love, respect and dignity they deserve.”

Food for Life is dependent on donations to provide this service and is always short on funds.

“We invite our community to donate money, volunteer time, donate food or sponsor a feed at R100 for 20 children or R300 for a food parcel for a destitute family. Not every rand, but every cent is accounted for and verified by our independent auditors. We make sure that every parcel reaches those who are in abject poverty and every family signs for the parcels they receive.

“We would like to thank Devland Cash and Carry, Crossing SUPERSPAR, Food Lover’s Market and Spice Emporium for their generous discounts to help stretch our budget to serve many more families.”
