DCM Donates more than 7 000 food hampers to local schools

Dwarsrivier Chrome Mine (DCM) wrapped up its Covid-19 Stay Safe donations last week. The mine, in partnership with Boleng Trust, donated 7 770 hampers to 13 high schools in the Ngwaabe Circuit.

The schools also received personal protective equipment (PPE) such as infrared thermometers, face masks, face shields and sanitisers. Thabo Maluleke, a field officer at Boleng Trust, said the purpose of the Covid-19 Stay Safe initiative was to assist local schools and communities with essential PPE and food.

“The pandemic has hit everybody badly. We all know it’s difficult to focus when you’re hungry and we believe that well-fed learners can easily concentrate in class.

The first batch of the project saw us donating to matrics in June. On September 23, we officially completed the project as we donated to grades eight and nine.

“We are grateful to the Steelpoort Pick n Pay for helping with the packing and distribution of these hampers. The donations were received by the principals and the Ngwaabe circuit manager, Harry Dinkwenyane.

The circuit manager thanked the mine for the donations and pleaded with other businesses to do the same.

“We are grateful for what the mine has done for our schools. We had difficulties with our current thermometers as some were faulty. We are extremely grateful towards the mine for this generous offer. All we have to do now is to work hard to ensure we improve our matric pass rate in our schools.”

Cake flour, maize meal, tinned foods, soups, jam and other essential and non-perishable items were donated. Shorwane High School’s principal Wilfred Makuwa said his school benefited from the project. “We wholeheartedly thank DCM with their generosity in assisting with the provision of food hampers to those in need.

The food parcels, face masks and the thermometers have helped our school and the community of Ga Maepa. May they continue to assist the poor during these tough times.”

Some of the high schools that benefited from the initiative included Kgahlanong, Seokgome, Mashupje, Makopole, Gobetse, Nkotwane, Mmahlagare, Sengange, Makgwale, Mashego, Ngwanatheko and Ngwaabe Comprehensive.
