Mbombela police condemn suspected mob killing in Mataffin

The station commander urged the community to join the police in the fight against crime and to be part of the solution.

A 30-year-old man was allegedly killed by members of the Mataffin community yesterday, according to the Nelspruit police spokesperson, Capt Zandile Gqawa.

“According to information at the SAPS’ disposal, community members accused the man of committing  housebreaking in the area. They assaulted him and dumped his body near one of the shops in Mataffin,” said Gqawa. The police have denounced the murder, with the Nelspruit station commander, Maj Gen Dora Xaba, issuing a stern warning against vigilante attacks by the community.

“It is regrettable that some community members still believe in taking the law into their own hands. Two wrongs cannot make a right,” she said. Xaba urged the community to join the SAPS in the fight against crime and to be part of the solution. A case of murder has been lodged at the Nelspruit Police Station, but no arrests have been made as yet. Officials request that anyone with information  that may help in the investigation, to contact Det Col Ernest Maoka on 082-318-9843.
