Pretoria High School for Girls have caused an outrage because of what they believe is racism and a discouragement of their blackness.

Gauteng MEC Panyaza Lesufi visited the school on Monday to investigate the racism allegations. The learners alleged that school rules forbid African hairstyles such as afros, bantu knots, dreadlocks and braids.

The girls also claim that they are not allowed to speak their own language and that a teacher apparently called them monkeys while they were singing and chanting in class.

The Citizen reported that a petition was circulated that had gained 4 201 signatures by early Monday morning in which the school is accused of forcing black girls to straighten their natural hair and “conspiring” when standing in groups.
