Stray animals next to the roads to be impounded

The police will soon launch a joint operation with members of nature conservation to remove all stray stock such as cattle, donkeys and goats from the Tubatse area

BURGERSFORT – The police will soon launch a joint operation with members of nature conservation to remove all stray stock such as cattle, donkeys and goats from the Tubatse area.

Numerous car accidents on the R37 and R555 are caused by these animals crossing the road, especially during the night when drivers are unable to clearly spot them in time. “The communities are advised to look after their animals. The accidents are caused by the negligence of owners. We are going to impound all animals found next to the roads and in town. Owners will be fined when collecting their animals,” said Const Victoria Maluleka, police spokesman.

Mr Thabiso Mokoena, spokesman for the Greater Tubatse Municipality, said that they were not aware of this new campaign initiated by the police, but that they were very pleased about it.

He added that the municipality started to discuss ideas regarding the impound of stray livestock, but that they were still in the process of searching for suitable land to build a well-constructed kraal where the animals would be kept.

An employee from the Department of Agriculture in Praktiseer commented that the department was aware of a kraal being constructed in the Moroke area for stray stock to be impounded, but they did not know who was responsible for the constructing of it.
