Another dumping site in Burgersfort

BURGERSFORT – More and more illegal dumping sites are nowadays seen all over Tubatse.

Steelburger/Lydenburg News received numerous complaints about illegal dumping sites in and around villages.

Another illegal dumping site was recently spotted at Aloe Ridge West in Kobus Street where the trash remained uncollected and was scattered all over the place.

A resident, Mr Johan Nel showed his displeasure with the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM). He highlighted that they had complained to GTM on several occasions and also the Department of Health, but nothing had been done to rectify the situation.

“We cleaned most of the areas, but after a couple of weeks, it is the same situation again.”

The waste included everything from builders’ rubble, baby nappies, household rubbish to dead animals.

Meanwhile, residents of Praktiseer, Longtill, Riba Cross, Mashamothane and Mabocha villages said they were tired of the bad odour and watching their children playing in filthy illegal dumping sites.

Mashamothane residents complained of baby nappies being discarded on the tarred roads while Praktiseer people said rubbish was thrown into the Tubatse River, which they sometimes used as drinking water.

Environmental specialist in Tubatse, Mr Collen Mojela said they had requested that a “no dumping” sign be erected around more sites or a big rubbish bin provided, but nothing had been done.

By the time of going to print Mr Thabiso Mokoena, spokesman for GTM was not available for comment.
