More and more illegal dumping sites in Tubatse.

"People who dump illegally should be fined. The illegal site between Dresden and Alverton villages was cleared up two weeks ago, but the area is filthy again. "We tried to help, but we are losing hope," he complained.

BURGERSFORT – Steelburger/Lydenburg News recently received numerous complaints about illegal dumping sites in and around villages.

Residents of Praktiseer, Longtill, Riba Cross, Mashamothane and Mabocha said they were tired of the bad odour and seeing their children play in filthy illegal dumping sites.

The waste included everything from builders’ rubble, nappies and household refuse, to dead animals. Mashamothane residents complained of nappies being discarded on the tarred roads while Praktiseer people said the rubbish was being thrown into the Tubatse River, which they sometimes used as a source of water.

Environmental specialist, Mr Collen Mojela, who showed his displeasure with the Greater Tubatse Municipality (GTM), said they had complained to GTM on several occasions but nothing had been done to rectify the situation.

“We cleaned most of the areas, but after a couple of weeks, it began to stink again.”

Mojela said they had requested that a “no dumping” sign be erected and a large rubbish bin be provided, but nothing had happened.

“People who dump illegally should be fined. The illegal site between Dresden and Alverton villages was cleared up two weeks ago, but the area is filthy again. “We tried to help, but we are losing hope,” he complained.

The paper also visited the site and discovered that it was unfenced and rubbish lay scattered everywhere.

At the time of going to print Mr Thabiso Mokoena, spokesman for GTM, was not available for comment.
