Slimmers accept challenge to change and raise funds

A group of 51 slimmers have started an initiative which encourages people to lose weight and raise money for charity.

LYDENBURG – A group of 51 slimmers have started an initiative which encourages people to lose weight and raise money for charity.

The aim is to motivate people to do something beneficial for their own health while raising money.

If they lose a certain amount of weight in a certain period of time, the Herbal Life Wellness Centre will generate funds for the Ondersteuningsraad of Lydenburg.

This organisation takes care of needy families and they are also responsible for the child-protection initiative. If a child is sexually abused, he/she need to go for three different tests that cost R3 000 to R7 000 each.

The organisation cannot afford the expenses, therefore the wellness centre assists them to raise funds.

Many participants are using the charity event as the motivation they need to stay on track with their weight-loss goal.

Mariaan de Lange is one of the people in Lydenburg involved in a diet bet. She said since she started living a new healthy lifestyle, she has lost more than 8kg.

“I have set up my own diet and the amount to pay, the centre facilitates us in collecting the money,” she explained.

The participants pledge to losing a certain amount of kilograms and vow to pay a penalty fee if they gain weight. The community participates in three different categories: weight loss; fat loss and muscle gain.

The centre also gets companies to pledge money for the amount of kilograms the participants lose. If they lose 10kg, the company will pay R100 per kg.

The team has lost a total of 76,7kg since they started on June 15 and the competition ends on October 30.

Regular weigh-ins are required to see how the members handle the new journey of living healthy, and there’s an opportunity to share experiences at the centre.

According to De Lange the bet allows her to create personal goals since she knows she’s doing it for a good cause.

Michael de Lange has joined his sister for moral support. Michael is in the muscle-gain category; since he started, his physical appearance has changed.

“Every morning my sister and I prepare our healthy meals. The challenge has changed my life,” he said.

“We will start with our new campaign on January 13 next year. This is just a trial for our big campaign next year,” she added.

The prize-giving is on November 12 at De Ark Guesthouse with Sorina “the Flooze” as the guest artist.

“We urge people to join us next year as we are in need of more pledges from the companies, so that we can increase our target amount.”
