ANC announces decision on secretaries

The party's regional secretary of Ehlanzeni has been allowed to appear on the ANC's list for the provincial legislature.

NELSPRUIT – The ANC’s national list committee has agreed to let the regional secretary of the party’s Ehlanzeni branch serve in legislature after the forthcoming elections.

Earlier, the national party list committee had rejected the bid of Mr Pat Ngomane, regional secretary of Ehlanzeni; Mr Muzi Chirwa, regional secretary of Gert Sibande District; and Ms Clara Ndlovu, provincial secretary of the ANC Women’s League to be allowed to go to provincial legislature after the elections, on the basis that they occupy full-time positions in the party.

On Monday, Mr Lucky Ndinisa, provincial secretary of the ANC, said that the national appeals committee had approved the provincial ANC’s appeal against this decision.

“However, while they have put Mr Pat Ngomane on the safe side, Ndlovu and Chirwa have been put on the reserve list. During the special provincial executive this morning, we resolved to honour and accept the decision.”

Ndinisa explained that Ngomane’s position on the list basically ensures that he will serve in legislature (and not parliament like Ndinisa had previously told Lowvelder) once the results of the election, to be held on May 7, has been announced. The ANC currently holds 27 of the 30 positions in the legislature, a number the party said it did not expect to diminish. If he does win a seat Ngomane will have to officially step down as regional secretary.

“The three comrades must continue to do the work as they did before,” Ndinisa said.
