Laerskool Laeveld’s excellent achievements at this year’s eisteddfod

The school won over 700 certificates during the competition.

MBOMBELA – For Laerskool Laeveld the yearly Nelspruit Eisteddfod brings an opportunity to showcase the excellent cultural programme the school offers.

With more than 400 Laeveld learners participating in this year’s eisteddfod as well as one of their teachers, Marietjie Green, being the head of the Afrikaans category the school certainly has a reason to be proud.

Some of the children participated in more than one item bringing the school’s total certificate count to 702. This is made up out of 21 As, 378 A pluses and 303 A doubles pluses.

“We are really proud of all of the children who participated,” Green said about the pupils. She has been involved with the eisteddfod for 30 years. “This year the participants in the Afrikaans category were a little fewer. This is due to the fact that the English category is growing at a rapid pace and schools are focusing a lot more on this language,” she said.

Laerskool Laeveld’s speaking choir as well as their head girl, Niandi Coetzee, also had the privilege of performing at the eisteddfod gala evening with Niandi bringing in seven A double plus certificates.

Another achievement for the school was the speaking choir from their grade three English class which scored 95 per cent in the Afrikaans category – an achievement that was made in their second language none the less. Truly a brilliant achievement by the school.
