Pro Gratia trail run all about the fun

Despite a small number of entries for the recent Pro Gratia fun trail run, participants were in high spirits and ready to create awareness for a good cause while sweating it out on the route.

There were options for the one-, five- and 10-kilometre distances on the Fit To Go trail route starting at the airfield at Bagdad Centre, but entries were only received for the two later races.

Jehanger Khan took first place on the podium for the longer route in a time of 01:30:33. Finishing just behind him was Anwar Shaik (01:30:34).

In the five-kilometre race, avid cyclist Yolanda Lizmore beat the men to cross the finish line first in a time of 28:44. “I am here to support Pro Gratia. Anything else is simply a bonus,” she told Lowvelder.
The 28-year-old Keith Liston crossed the finish line for the men’s gold medal soon after in 29:19, not a bad time considering he had just run the parkrun at Ngwenyama Lodge half an hour previously.
According to Liezel du Plessis who represented Pro Gratia at the event, “the school is so grateful of the awareness created through events like these”. She added that the school accommodates 130 children at present but the numbers keep growing. “We are busy trying to build better facilities and every little bit helps,” Du Plessis said.

The event was organised by Ilze van der Merwe, as her son Edrich is a finalist for Mr Junior South Africa. All finalists in the competition are expected to do a certain amount of charity work.

He was, in fact, the first junior to finish in the five-kilometre race and he ran the whole distance with his pageant sash blowing in the wind.

Van der Merwe thanked the sponsors for the event, which meant there were spot prizes for all the competitors.
