Ranger gunned down in KNP

The tragic death of a Lower Sabie field ranger came amid a successful two days of anti-poaching operations in the Kruger National Park.

SKUKUZA – An apparent accidental shooting during an anti-poaching operation in Lower-Sabie led to the death of a field ranger yesterday in the Kruger National Park (KNP).

The field ranger is based in Lower Sabie but his name has not been made public.

Mr William Mabasa told Lowvelder that details about the incident were still sketchy. SAPS are investigating.

The incident took place during a successful two days in which 10 suspected poachers were arrested and four high calibre rifles seized in anti-poaching operations.

SANParks CEO, Mr Fundisile Mketeni said the shooting dealt a big blow the Rangers Corps, the SANParks family and the anti-poaching campaign.

“We are saddened by the death of one of our hardworking colleagues and pass our sincerest condolences to his family and his associates,” he said.
