‘Illegal mining was rife months before Lily collapse’
Vantage Goldfields CEO, Mr Mike McChesney, testified during the second day of the inquiry into the mine disaster on Tuesday.
MBOMBELA – Vantage Goldfields CEO, Mr Mike McChesney, testified during the public inquiry into the disaster, that their investigation revealed illegal mining took place before the mine collapsed.

The inquiry started on Monday and is tasked with investigating the underlying causes of the accident.
McChesney said Vantage Goldfields did its own investigation before the collapse and found there were a great deal of Zama-Zamas (illegal miners) operating in the area.
