Athletes’ commitment to excellence pays off

The school’s shining star, Norbert Ponisammy, achieved three golds. He finished the boys u/19 100 metre with a time of 10,46 seconds. His other two golds were achieved in the u/19 200 metre and u/19 long jump.

One of the more beautiful moments was when Norbert waved his hands to the ecstatic cheerleaders, who attended the sporting event to support their athletes.

He further raised the bar by breaking his own u/19 100 metre sprint record with a 10,46 seconds finish compared to his 2016 time of 10,54.

The principal, Jane Wandrag, said the school wants to further improve its overall performance and do better in 2018. “We started preparing in September last year with pre-season training, but I think this year we will need to put in more energy and commitment to achieve greater results,” she said. Wandrag mentioned she was particularly pleased with the sprints, especially Norbert who broke his own record.

“Nolwazi Mashaba did well in triple jump, Norbert in sprints and long jump, Banele Muwayi in long jump and Frank Muwayi in triple jump. I was also very happy with the u/19 boys and u/19 girls relay races. Bongani Nkosi performed very well in the 1500 metre,” said Wandrag.

She added that they will put more effort into the girls team.

Nolwazi did extremely well in the girls u/15 long jump, earning the school a gold medal. She obtained a second gold when she came first in the girls u/19 triple jump. Her peer, Gugu Nkambule came third and won a bronze.

Gugu was also a complete success with her gold in the girls u/19 long jump.

Nthabiseng Mabuza also shone in the girls u/19 high jump and achieved second place.
