Tracker honours the heroes in crime war

The Tracker provincial awards were held at Bushveld Lodge.

MBOMBELA – Tracker held its annual provincial awards at Bushveld Lodge last Friday. The Tracker Awards were instituted to honour law-enforcement officers and units whose efforts in the use of the Tracker system made a significant impact in the recovery of stolen and hijacked vehicles, thereby contributing in the fight against crime. Deputy police commissioner in Mpumalanga, Maj Gen Thulani Paahla, gave a speech on behalf of the provincial police commissioner who could not attend the event. He said Tracker staff members were colleagues of the police.

“It has become a partnership that we have built and maintained. We as the police appreciate everything you are doing,” he said. According to Mr Ron Knott-Craig, director of operations of Tracker, the company acknowledged that stolen vehicles played a big role in various forms of crime. “Vehicle theft is a specific crime, but stolen vehicles are also used to commit other crimes,” he explained of Tracker’s initiative. He was also impressed with the recovery rate of stolen vehicles in Mpumalanga.

“This is because the police and Tracker work as a team, we regard each other as colleagues.” Paahla and Knott-Craig handed out nomination certificates to various security companies and the police.

This year’s winners were Const Tebatso Thokwane from Kwamhanga Visible Policing and Capt Pieter Smit from SAPS White River Flying Squad.

The national awards will be held on October 7 in Johannesburg.
