VIDEO: Escaped pig wreaks havoc at Crossing Centre

MBOMBELA – Shoppers who visited Crossing Centre after a long day at work, witnessed a rib-tickling spectacle on Tuesday evening.

One driver, who attempted to take the slipway to the N4, had to stop suddenly when a large domestic pig ran across the road, heading towards the shops.

It is not known whether the animal wanted to avoid the abattoir, was tired of life in a sty, or disliked the crisp autumn air, but he had jumped off the back of a bakkie which was transporting him and two other pigs. The swine was, however, soon to discover that his leap for freedom was more a matter of jumping out of the frying pan into the fire.

A enterprising young man, renowned for begging in the area, was keen to bring home the bacon and chased after the boar. The pig was not too keen on being captured and pointed its snout in the opposite direction of the chasers and there went the whole hog.

The swine flew across the newly constructed traffic circle and on to the parking lot. Although the pursuers initially made a pig’s ear of the chase, the animal was eventually pinned down by two beggars and Mr Finias Mokone, who works on a farm in Clau-Clau to which the pigs were being transported.

Many drivers hooted and some stopped to view the scene. Mokone’s employer was contacted and informed of the incident. A bakkie arrived chop-chop to collect Mokone and the animal.

As the three men, along with two employees of Hi-Tech Guards and other bystanders escorted the pig to the bakkie, it squealed loudly and attempted to leg it again. Eventually the men succeeded in getting the pig, trotters and all, onto the bakkie and it drove off.
