Group of monkeys kills old one

Vervet monkeys are common sight in the area and have become part of the community.

MBOMBELA – A vervet monkey died today after it was attacked by a group of other vervet monkeys in Steiltes.

According to Mr Jack Klopper from the Mpumalanga Animal Crime Watch (MACW), the old and well-known monkey in the area was engaged in a fight with other monkeys.

“He fought and tried to escape the attack but unfortunately they finished him off,” said Kloppers. He noted that the monkey had also carried an old wound.

“He had maggots coming out of the wound, if I had found the monkey five days ago maybe it would have been saved,”he lamented.

Klopper said vervet monkeys are a common sight in the area and have become a part of their community. ” We need to find a way to live with animals because any development that comes in any given area takes away space for animals to live in,” he added.

Klopper said that he sometimes gave food to the monkeys in the area. He also buried the dead monkey on his farm.
