MBOMBELA – When Charmaine Neethling lost her mother to cancer, she felt there was no one who could understand her pain. However, she found peace in the company of her late mom’s dogs.

On Saturday, Charmaine joined other Lowvelders to take part in the Cancer Association of South Africa’s (CANSA) Bark for Life event at Pro-Life Pet Rescue. She and other dog lovers took their pets on a 1,6-kilometre walk as a sign of appreciation to their animals.

The participants then share their heart-warming experiences and receive some support. Charmaine had her two dogs, Lanoire and Devante with her and spoke so fondly of them. ” They mean everything to me, if I am stressed I know I have a companion to make me forget about my problem,” she said.

She also said it was easy for her to open up to her dogs because she knew whatever they talked about, would stay between them. Her love of dogs has also been transferred to her daughter, Lecharl Neethling who helps her mother with their kennelling on weekends.
