Relieve dry, irritated eyes during wintertime

Dry eyes can be alleviated in various ways. Here's how.

MBOMBELA – Do you struggle with burning, sensitive eyes during wintertime?

Dust and smoke is more prevalent in drier air as winter takes over our normally warm, humid region.  This causes many people’s eyes to become dry and uncomfortable. Symptoms of dry eye include scratchiness, burning, discomfort, excessive tearing and sensitivity to light.

Winter time increases the effects of dry eye as heaters, cold air and less humidity intensifies the problem.

Without treatment, dry eye can cause eye infection, scarring and visual impairment.  Although dry eye may start as a mild discomfort, it is important to seek treatment as the condition is progressive and may lead to vision problems.

Although typically treated with eye drops, other measures may be necessary.

A humidifier in your bedroom can assist in relieving dry eye symptoms.

Artificial tears or gels may be applied topically to provide relief.

Add flaxseed oil or fish oil can also be added to your diet to provide relief.
