KNP elephants reportedly spotted along N4 in Moz

As soon as any animal breaks out of the park, it is no longer under the jurisdiction of SANParks

MOZAMBIQUE – A herd of elephant isn’t something you’d expect along the N4, but that is exactly what Facebook user Mr Ricardo Palermo claims he saw earlier today.

He posted under Moz Info a few hours ago that he had spotted a big herd of the animals on the right side of the toll road, 15 kilometres after the Ressano Garcia border heading to Maputo.  He added that they had most probably broken out of the Kruger National Park and that he hoped the animals would make it back safely.

He included a photo he had taken, but the animals, if any, cannot be seen clearly.

Another Facebook user commented that she has alerted section ranger Mr Don English.

Spokesman for Kruger, Mr William Mabasa, on enquiry said that he hadn’t been informed as such and explained that, as soon as any animal breaks out of the park, it is no longer under the jurisdiction of SANParks’ and becomes the responsibility of Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency. That is if the animal breaks out on the South African side.

“The relevant authorities in Mozambique need to be informed of this,” he added.

Palermo later added that he did speak to Transafrican Concessions which manages the N4. “They are dispatching a team and informed me that it was the second time this year that elephants have crossed.”
