12 injured in Rocky Drift pile-up

Traffic on the R40 to Rocky Drift is backed up after four vehicles collided at about 13:20.

UPDATE – A taxi, a Selous Tours bus, a Polo Vivo and a truck were involved in a collision at the Plaston turn-off on the R40 on Thursday afternoon.

According to an eyewitness, the tour bus was on its way to Orpen, and had just picked up tourists at the airport. It was stationary at the turn-off, waiting for a gap in oncoming traffic when the mini-bus taxi ploughed into the Venter trailer it was towing.

The two vehicles swerved over the road, bumped into the truck and then collided with the Polo. “The taxi was going quite fast,” the eyewitness said.
Nine taxi passengers were injured and taken to Rob Fereirra Hospital, and three seriously injured tourists were transported to MediClinic Nelspruit. A young woman in the tour bus suffered a severe head injury and was airlifted to MediClinic.

The driver and passenger of the Polo were fortunately unhurt. The passengers in the tourbus were from Germany, Netherlands, Canada and USA.

According to Brig Selvy Mohlala, the police will investigate the incident.
