Decline in Mpumalanga water levels continues

The majority of the dams in the Inkomati-Usuthu Water Management Area and Ehlanzeni District dropped slightly in capacity, and only a few showed any increase.

The decline in water levels in Mpumalanga continues.

According to the Department of Water and Sanitation’s weekly state of reservoirs report, issued on August 28, the average dam levels in the province further dropped from last week’s 96.7% to 96.2%.

The Inkomati-Usuthu Water Management Area recorded a further drop from 97.0% to 96.5%, while the Ehlanzeni District also dropped from 99.5% to 99.1%.

Most of the listed dams in the Lowveld and Ehlanzeni District recorded declines in water volumes, with only Klipkopjes recording a slight improvement from 99.6% to 99.8%. Buffelskloof and Witklip remained unchanged at 100.1% and 100.2% respectively.

On the decline mode, Blyderivierspoort dropped from 100.2% to 100%, Driekoppies from 99.9% to 99.6%, Longmere from 100% to 98.7%, Primkop from 101.1% to 100.4%, Kwena from 99.5% to 99%, Da Gama from 100.3% to 98.4%, Inyaka from 100.1% to 100% and Ohrigstad from 80.9% to 79.3%.

The Vygeboom Dam also remained unchanged at 100.3%.

Nooitgedacht dropped from 92.0% to 90.7%

The department encouraged the public to be responsible and more conservative in their water use, taking into consideration that South Africa is a water-scarce country where every drop counts.
