Lowveld’s floods damage repairs to commence soon

Each municipality will receive its own grant to repair the damages. The provincial government will monitor the funds to ensure projects are implemented and completed.

The National Treasury recently paid out some of the municipalities that had been affected by the floods earlier this year for damage repairs.

The provincial spokesperson for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta), Lindiwe Msibi, confirmed that the funds were paid and that each municipality will appoint its own service providers to do the repairs.

“The department played its own part by making sure all the relevant documents were submitted to the treasury. Each municipality will receive its grant to repair the damages. Cogta will monitor the funds to ensure all projects are implemented and completed,” she said.

The spokesperson for the City of Mbombela, Joseph Ngala, confirmed the receipt of R11.8m from the treasury. However, he did not divulge which projects they were going to start with or if they had appointed any service providers yet.

Nkomazi Local Municipality’s spokesperson, Cyril Ripinga, confirmed that they received R16m for the flood damages. Water and road infrastructure are at the top of their list, and they have already advertised a tender so that they can appoint service providers.

The spokesperson for Bushbuckridge Local Municipality, Pfumulani Thobakgale, said the municipality had not yet received any payment, only a letter of approval.
