Lydenburg home engulfed in flames

Community urged to remain vigilant around fires.

A fire broke out in a house in Rivier Street on Thursday at 19:00. The Lydenburg SAPS was on the scene, and the Thaba Chweu Emergency Services was able to extinguish the fire in about 20 minutes.

The house was burning very aggressively, and the flames combusted at an intense level. The roof did not cave in, however, and no one was injured in the blaze.

Thaba Chweu Local Municipality’s (TCLM) Disaster Management Centre has warned the public to be vigilant as fire eruptions increase at this time of the year. “We see a lot of fires in informal dwellings, as well as veld fires. We are urging the community to remain vigilant and protect themselves and their properties from the potential devastation,” said Themba Sibiya, TCLM’s media and marketing manager.

The homeowner was not prepared to comment before the fire investigation had been completed. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
