JJ Peters’ mental assessment to determine court case’s course in Mbombela
JJ Peters will know at his next court appearance June 5 if he is fit to stand trial.
The ongoing JJ Peters saga will soon enter its next phase when he returns to court on June 5.
His medical tests and ability to stand trial have been assessed, and there no further delays are expected.
The spokesperson for the provincial National Persecution Authority, Monica Nyuswa, said Peters had completed all mental tests after his legal team requested he be assessed by a professional psychiatrist before standing trial.

“This was done to ensure he is fit to stand trial and understands the gravity of the crime he allegedly committed. At his next appearance the assessor will present a report of these observations. If it shows that he is indeed fit to appear in court the trial will proceed with his plea.”
Peters has been in police custody for the past 16 months. He was arrested for allegedly killing his grandmother, Sannie Strydom Kilmister (68), on February 28, 2022. At the time of her death Peters had been sharing her house on a smallholding in the Cromdale area. She was found dead in her bedroom with various bruise marks on her neck and blood splatters on her pillow.
