Mpumalanga’s cross-country running season is in full swing

With the first of the 10 cross-country leagues scheduled for this year's season done an dusted, athletes have nine more attempts to qualify for the Mpumalanga Championships taking place later this year.

The first Athletics Mpumalanga Cross-Country meet for Ehlanzeni was held at Mbombela Stadium on Saturday April 15.

A total of 341 athletes competed in various age categories, ranging from boys and girls under eight, to the more seasoned athletes in the 70+ bracket.

The youngest competitor was only five years old and the eldest 70.

The meeting was hosted by Ngodwana Marathon Club. According to Dephney Masiye of the club, they are satisfied with the turnout and would like to thank all the parents and other parties who were involved.

“To all referees, marshals, timekeepers, announcers, media and the results desk, we thank you all for your hard work,” Masiye said.

There are 10 leagues meetings scheduled for this season, with the Mpumalanga Championships to take place on August 19, which will be followed by the South African Championships in September.

Definition Athletics Club will play host for the next meet.
*The race has since been postponed due problems with the venue. An alternative date is still being decided on.
