Mpumalanga High Court postpones rhino poaching and money laundering trial

The accused in the trial, which was recently postponed to May, included two murdered alleged kingpins of a rhino poaching syndicate, Chief Clyde Mnisi and Petros Mabuza.

The trial of two deceased alleged kingpins of a massive rhino poaching syndicate, Chief Clyde Mnisi and Petros Mabuza, and their four co-accused has been postponed.

Claude Lubisi, Joseph Nyalunga, Aretha Mhlanga and Rachel Qwebana, who are facing charges relating to rhino poaching and money laundering, appeared in the Mpumalanga High Court on Monday April 17.

That was supposed to be the start of their trial, however, Mpumalanga’s National Prosecuting Authority’s spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the trial had been postponed to May 19 to allow the accused to submit their representations to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

“The matter was postponed for the outcome of their representations,” Nyuswa said.

Mnisi was gunned down in an apparent hit on March 26 next to the KMI Airport road near White River.

Mabuza, known to many as Mshengu, was shot multiple times in broad daylight opposite a garage in Hazyview on June 17, 2021.

All six had originally been arrested in September 2018.

The motives for both Mnisi and Mabuza’s murders are still unclear, and no arrests have been made as yet.
