House of half a million razed to the ground in KaMajika

After the local induna ruled that the man must leave because the land does not belong to him, he demolished the house.

A house in KaMajika worth hundreds of thousands of rands was demolished after the man who built it was told to remove himself from the land by his ex-wife.

According to a family member, the man previously lived in a two-roomed house owned by the woman’s family after they had separated a few years ago. The ex-wife started living another man. “The man then married a second wife and built a new, bigger house worth more than R500 000 when it was finished. However, his ex-wife decided to evict him and threatened him, informing him that he could not live in the house because the land did not belong to him or his new wife.

“He refused to leave, and the matter was referred to a local induna, who ruled that the land belonged to the woman’s family and that the man had to leave. He was left with no choice but to remove his furniture. He hired an excavator and demolished the house, telling the community to take whatever they wanted from the debris,” the source said.

They tried to convince him not to demolish the house and to handle the matter in a civil manner, but he refused. Meanwhile, one of the neighbours also claimed that when the first wife had left, she also left one of her kids from a previous relationship behind.

“He was treating the child as his own while she was staying with another man; she only came after she realised that the house was finished. The irate first husband decided to return the land to his ex-wife’s family and said she and her new husband can build their own house.
The couple was not available for comment by the time of going to press.
