Eight pedestrians killed on Lowveld roads

Traffic is currently moving smoothly at the borders,  with fewer accidents on the roads.

Eight pedestrians have died on Lowveld roads since the start of the festive season, despite fewer accidents compared to last year.

Traffic at the Lebombo Border Post is moving as planned and officials have cleared the trucks. This, however, could change with the high volume of traffic expected on December 24.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Mmusi Moeti, they are concerned about the number of pedestrians that have died, while they are happy with the lower number of accidents on the roads. He also said they were expecting high traffic due to the easing of Covid-19 restrictions, but most motorists are behaving well on the roads.

“So far, only two people died in an accident in the Waterval Boven tunnel on Friday (December 23) when a HMV was travelling in the west bound lane and a LDV was travelling in the east bound lane.

“The driver of the HMV fell asleep, moved over into the oncoming traffic and collided head on with the LDV, killing the LDV driver instantly,” he said.

“We are concerned about the number of pedestrians killed so far. We are therefore pleading with them to cross the road when it is safe to do so. They must avoid crossing the freeway, instead, they must use the demarcated pedestrian areas,” he said.
