R538 in Masoyi open to buses, taxis operating as normal

The R538 has reopened and buses and taxis are operating normally despite the road still being littered with debris. This comes after taxi operators had barricaded the R538 on Monday September 26, demanding that Buscor stop transporting cash-paying commuters during working hours. This angered members of the community, who embarked on a protest to blockade the road to stop taxi drivers from operating.

According to the spokesperson for Buscor, Thomas Lubisi, everything is back to normal and their buses transported commuters to work without any problem. They believe that they will also be able to ferry them home at the end of the day without further trouble. “We have met with the concerned taxi associations and the provincial police commissioner to resolve the differences. I will divulge all information regarding the agreement in a statement in due course.”

The spokesperson for the Masoyi police, Captain Nanikie Nonyane, confirmed that the road is open and that the police have been deployed to monitor the situation. “Taxi and buses are operating as normal and we did not receive any reports of road closures. However, we will keep a close eye on this,” she said.

The White Hazy Taxi Association was unavailable for comment.
