Cash in transit robbery in Dwarsloop

One security guard sustained serious injuries during the robbery, and the criminals got away with an undisclosed amount of money and rifles.

At 07:00 this morning, ten armed assailants bombed a Fidelity cash vehicle on the R40 near Dwarsloop Mall, escaping with an undisclosed amount of cash, three rifles and a handgun belonging to security guards.

According to the Bushbuckridge Police Station spokesperson, Merilyne Mmonwa, the robbers used a Mercedes-Benz to hit the cash transit vehicle and the driver lost control and overturned. They then ordered the security guards out of the car and bombed it.

“They took the security guards’ weapons at gunpoint and loaded the money into a bakkie and fled the scene. However, before fleeing the scene, they torched the car that they used to hit the vehicle to destroy the evidence,” she said.

One of the security guards sustained serious injuries when the vehicle overturned and was rushed to the nearest hospital for medical attention.
Traffic is currently at a standstill while the police examine the crime scene.

Motorists are advised to use alternative routes to avoid delays.
