Limpopo families welcome back initiates

The Limpopo MEC for corporative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs, Basikopo Makamu, was at Tafelkop where he welcomed more than 1 500 initiates.

BURGERSFORT – The Limpopo Government is hailing this year’s initiation season as a resounding success.
The reopening of initiation schools two years after their halt during the Covid-19 pandemic has attracted thousands of youngsters and so far this year, only one death was reported.

Six-hundred-and-eighty initiation schools were approved, and just under 200 of those were for girls.
All the schools are expected to close by Sunday July 31.

In Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality, the Marota a Bogwasha Tribal Authority, Ga-Kgoshi Sebotha of the Ga-Makofane Tribal Authority, and the Roka Malepe Tribal Authority were among those who celebrated their initiates this past weekend. There were no fatalities in Fetakgomo Tubatse and all schools were a success.

The Limpopo MEC for corporative governance, human settlements and traditional affairs, Basikopo Makamu, was at Tafelkop where he welcomed more than 1 500 initiates.

“This season we had a higher number of initiates. One death is too many and we won’t accept it. As Provincial Government, traditional leadership and parents, we should be working together to ensure there is zero tolerance and we comply with the legislation and provisions. This will minimise deaths at our schools. We are worried with the death and we have learnt lessons from this setback. We will surely improve in the next season.”
