City of Mbombela employees down tools

The employees allege the municipality management does not put their best interests at heart.

Mbombela was covered in filth this morning, July 5, following a protest over wage disputes by some of the City of Mbombela’s waste management employees.

According to sourced information, the staff are aggrieved that their wage increment and bonuses were not addressed by the municipality.

“We are being taken for a ride. This municipality does not take us seriously. We were addressed by top management today who told us that if they had money, they would gladly pay us out of their own pockets. We view this statement as an insult,” said one of the protesting employees.

They dumped waste on almost all major streets in town and at the entrance to the municipality to demonstrate their dissatisfaction.

Although some staff are alleged to have downed tools completely and some are participating in a go-slow, the municipality remains open and operational.
